We had the opportunity this week to sit down to lunch with David Minchin, CEO of Helium One [LSE:HE1], a company exploring what could potentially be an enormous helium reserve in Tanzania. He was able to shed light on the company's plans for 2022 as well as brief us on the geology that he feels underpins what could become one of the biggest helium fields in the world.
It is important to understand just how tight the helium market globally could become, and indeed just how important that this resource could be. It is no coincidence that the company has been name checked in a speech by Tanzania's new president, Samia Hassan.
Helium is a major ingredient in a number of industries, including healthcare, electronics (semi-conductors) and space. Each Space X rocket, for example, burns 12 tons of helium per launch. The global demand for helium is also expected to sky rocket over the next few years, from around 6 bn cubic feet today to between 8.5 and 10bn cubic feet by 2030. Helium is hard to substitute and cannot be recycled.
