In this episode of the podcast, Stuart Fieldhouse talks to Rob Peterman of the Toronto Stock Exchange about the TSX Venture 50 list of companies, an annual list of the top performing stocks on the TSX Venture Exchange. The closely monitored and much anticipated list reflects the best of best of the entrepreneurial listed businesses in Canada.
Many TSXV-listed companies are available for trading to investors outside Canada. The TSX Venture Exchange includes 1,600 firms and we learn how the best are selected for the Venture 50. The exchange looks at a number of factors when it comes to selecting the stocks on the list, including share price appreciation and trading volumes.
The companies are selected from five different sectors. Being included on the list brings up and coming companies greater visibility, getting them on the radar screens of financial institutions. The TSX also provides videos on each of the companies that make it into the list, providing investors with a better understanding of the businesses behind the names.
This was a year when the mining sector was the top performer of the segments covered by the TSX Venture 50, thanks to the strong energy transition and cleantech stories represented by some of the stocks on the list. The tech and innovation sector is also bouncing back, especially as innovation issuers adjust to what the market is looking for.
With 40-50% of the daily trading volume on the TSX coming from outside Canada, especially from the US, being included on the list is important when it comes to attracting non-Canadian investment.
