Several years ago I was visiting Ukraine at a time when the military activity was confined to the far eastern part of the country, and the prospects of a full scale Russian invasion seemed distant. Indeed, Russia had yet to seize Crimea.
My driver at the time was a former Ukrainian paratrooper, who explained to me in great detail the levels Russia was going to disrupt Ukrainian society with online disinformation and hacking. This was before state-sponsored cyber attacks became an obvious tool that countries like Russia and North Korea were resorting to. It painted a picture, however, of an era where governments and corporations would need to protect their vital infrastructure from such threats.
The full extent of this threat is not, I feel, fully appreciated by the man on the street. Having also shared office space at one time with white hat hackers who work for FTSE 100 companies, I feel like I have a better appreciation of just how significant this threat is.
