The UK, US and the Eurozone in the week ahead

The UK, US and the Eurozone in the week ahead
  • US, EU and UK Manufacturing and Services PMIs
  • Federal Reserve FOMC minutes
  • US Thanksgiving

Monday 21 November

A very quiet start to the holiday-shortened week with only the release of the German Producer Prices Index (PPI), and a speech from German Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel to look forward to. US earnings announcements include Agilent Technologies, Zoom, Dell, and Urban Outfitters.

Tuesday 22 November

Overnight we have the Bank of Japan’s Core Consumer Price Index (CPI), and later a speech from the Governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia, Philip Lowe. Then there’s the UK’s Public Sector Net Borrowing, the Euro zone’s Current Account, and Consumer Confidence. There is also Canadian Retail Sales and the Richmond Manufacturing Index from the US. Then we have speeches from US FOMC members Loretta Mester, Esther George, and James Bullard. Later, there are updates on Australia’s Flash Manufacturing and Services PMIs. Key earnings reports come from Dick’s Sporting Goods, Analog Devices, Jack in the Box, Abercrombie & Fitch, Dollar Tree, HP, Best Buy, American Eagle, and Nordstrom.

Wednesday 23 November

Japanese banks are closed in observance of Labor Thanksgiving Day. The Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) will announce its latest decision on monetary policy through a statement and subsequent press conference. At its last meeting back in October the RNBZ raised rates by 50 basis points, as expected, taking its Official Cash Rate to 3.5%, a level last seen in April 2015. Could this be an opportunity for a pause, and reflection? Then we have updates on Flash Manufacturing and Services PMIs from France, Germany, the Euro zone, the UK and US. Unlike the majority of economic numbers, the Flash PMI data are considered leading indicators of economic health. Businesses react quickly to market conditions, and their purchasing managers (who are the subjects of these surveys) hold perhaps the most current and relevant insight into the companies views of the economy. From the US we also have Durable Goods, weekly Unemployment Claims, New Home Sales, Consumer Sentiment, Inflation Expectations, Crude Oil Inventories, and crucially, minutes from the Federal Reserve’s FOMC meeting earlier this month. Major earnings reports come from Deere, and Digital World.

Thursday 24 November

It’s US Thanksgiving, so we should expect a sharp drop in trading volumes and liquidity, not just today, but tomorrow as well, as many Americans take the opportunity to turn it into an extended weekend break. Overnight we have the Flash Manufacturing PMI from Japan. Then there’s the German ifo Business Climate survey, the UK’s CBI Industrial Order Expectations, and European Central Bank Monetary Policy Meeting Accounts. Later in the day we have another speech from German Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel.

Friday 25 November

Another light day on the economic calendar, with just the final update for German GDP, and the German GfK Consumer Climate survey.
