Graphite is the less loved of the two key components used in electric car batteries, but thanks to recent changes in US and EU regulation this is about to change.
While over the last two to three years a vast amount of column inches has been written about lithium and nickel, which are used in the positive part of the car battery, the cathode, graphite, which is used in the negative part, the anode, has mostly been overlooked. Understandably so. Lithium prices have gone from $130,000 a tonne pre-Covid to almost $600,000/t this month. Though graphite prices have risen by more than 20% this year they are still significantly cheaper at around $4,500/tonne.
